Orfeo, Sir

Orfeo, Sir
This narrative poem, written in southern England in the late 13th or early 14th century and probably based on a lost French original, retells the myth of Orpheus and Euridice as the story of an abduction to, and rescue from, *fairyland - here described as a land inside a mountain, with a rich castle standing among fertile fields; there Orfeo sees people who on earth had seemed to die by sickness or violence, but had really been taken by fairies. As a reward for his music, he is allowed to take Heurodis home (there is no taboo on looking in this version).
Text in Kenneth Sisam (ed.), 14th Century Verse and Prose (1921), 13-31; modern translation in J. R. R. Tolkien, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, and Sir Orfeo (1975).
